From the earliest tally sticks used by ancient merchants to the introduction of charge coins in the 19th century, humanity's need for efficient means of trade has constantly driven technological innovation. In the 1950s, the modern credit card was invented, giving people the ability to buy from many merchants with the same card and pay the total statement once a month. The instant purchasing power and financial flexibility is extremely attractive to consumers and the card industry has gone through exponential growth, with an estimated $10 trillion spent on cards each year in the U.S. alone.

At Mercury, we integrate complex payment instruments into seamless, robust solutions that power financial operations at businesses of all sizes. Our card products account for tens of millions of transactions yearly worth billions of dollars. The Cards Integration team focuses on the systems that provide card issuance, transaction authorization, and card network integrations. We’re hiring a manager to lead the team that builds Mercury’s most frequently used payment systems, ensuring that every swipe, tap, or click is processed with precision.

Here are some things you’ll do on the job:

  • Lead a team of 5 senior & staff backend engineers.
  • Build and maintain our foundational card issuing and transaction processing APIs.
  • Design improvements to an event-sourced ledger that records detailed history about each transaction.
  • Integrate with our partner banks to automate money movement for debit accounts, credit statement payments, and operational account balancing.
  • Regularly meet with external partners to coordinate on technical roadmaps and operational issues.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and resilience, empowering your team to deliver exceptional results.
  • Drive the team’s technical vision and architecture discussions, ensuring our solutions are scalable and future-proof.

The ideal candidate for the role:

  • Is a seasoned leader with 3+ years of experience managing technical teams, preferably in high-availability environments.
  • Has a strategic mindset and is adept at navigating the complexities of integrating diverse technologies.
  • Is well-versed in transaction processing systems, with an understanding of how card transactions interact with broader financial systems.
  • Is empathetic and effective in leadership; thrives on mentoring and building cohesive teams.

At Mercury, we’re not just building banking* solutions - we’re defining the art of simplified finances. If you’re ready to lead a team at the heart of our technology stack and make an impact on one of Mercury’s biggest revenue streams, we’d love to hear from you.
