About the Role:

Gusto is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to develop systems for our Commerce Platform. This platform oversees the merchandising of Gusto products, ensuring a single source of truth for all products, add-ons, bundles, promotions, and discounts, while also managing customer billing and invoicing. In this role, you will be crucial in designing, building, and optimizing the scalable and reliable infrastructure that underpins Gusto's merchandising ecosystem. The position demands deep technical expertise, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams to build systems that enhance the experience that impacts every Gusto customer.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Develop the software platform that drives all merchandising aspects of Gusto.
  • Design solutions that balance complexity, performance, and maintainability.
  • Engage in research and experimentation to enhance system performance and efficiency.
  • Offer technical mentorship to junior engineers and participate in code reviews to uphold code quality standards.
  • Take ownership of projects, ensuring they meet high standards of quality and performance.
  • Collaborate on complex and ambiguous problems with teams from Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Growth, Customer Support, and other cross-functional areas.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Over 15 years of professional software development experience.
  • A knack for bringing clarity and simplicity to complex and ambiguous problems.
  • Proven experience in designing, building, and testing large-scale, resilient distributed systems and software platforms.
  • Experience as a technical lead, managing the work of multiple engineers and teams on multi-quarter projects.
  • Skilled in mentoring other engineers and enhancing engineering culture and practices.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical complexity and facilitate informed decision-making.
  • Willingness to collaborate across various functions.
  • Priority: Experience in Pricing and Billing domains.
  • Bonus: Aside from enterprise or scaled settings, experience working in early-stage environments with rapid iteration cycles.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $261,000-290,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. $222,000-247,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
